Changing Front Disc Brake Pads

If your brakes are feeling a bit spongy or have just lost that bite then it may be worth checking to see the state of your disc pads. Its not a huge job and can be done if you are resaonably practical.

To start, jack the car up and remove the wheel.

Picture 2 - Carefully remove the two master cylinder pin bolts

Picture 3 - Lift the cylinder body and place safely to one side.

Picture 4 - Remove the pads by sliding out.

Picture 5/6/7 - STANDARD PAD THICKNESS WHEN NEW 10mm - PAD WEAR LIMIT 2mm

Picture 8 - Slide in new pads

Picture 9 - Ensure that the cylinder body slides along the two sleeves. To do this you may need to remove the rubber gasket and use WD40 to oil the sleeve.

Picture 10 - Using a Brake Calliper Piston Rewind Tool Kit (Halfords £20) you can now wind in the piston allowing you to re-fit the cylinder body.

Fit the two master cylinder bolts and check to ensure the wheel rotates.

TIP

When replacing the pad with a new one you will need to keep an eye on the brake fluid level.
